What did you do during the first 5 years or so after graduation?

The Vietnam War, of course. I finished college on a Wednesday and was drafted on Friday, January, 1968. I served 369 days with the 101st and was attached through the 25th M.A.S.H. Unit. This meant I did not jump out of any airplanes, although I do think I might have like it. Upon return to Stateside, I served as Ft. Carson Liaison to the united States Army at the Office of the Adjutant General. My favorite memory of that time? Paula Metzger Leeper was expecting a baby and had a difficult pregnancy. I helped Ricky avoid a year long tour of duty and he went to New Orleans instead. GOD WAS TOTALLY IN THAT DECISION. I will never forget it.

What type of jobs/places have you worked over the years?

I have been a teacher for 42 years. I married Ann Dunbar in 1971. She had cancer and died in 1998. However, we both attended Indiana University. She was a music major and the school of music there is simply incredible! It had four big recital halls and the best art in the world was on each instrument: Eleanor Fells, Harp;Abbie Simon,Piano;Josef Gingold,Violin;Eilene Farrell, Virginia MacWaters Voice. It was amazing to a young man who had been kicked out of a church choir and could not read music! My favorite memories of all the places I lived, however, was the pickup basketball games! It is my favorite adult memory of UK,IU,and Georgia. The great black players were in the parks, because they could get no scholarships. I played often at Woodland Park in Lexington. (In 1969 in a book entitled In Your Face Basketball, it was named the # 2 outdoor court in America.

Where have you lived since graduation?

Mostly in Indiana,Georgia, and Alabama. I have taught at Auburn, Indiana, and Alabama. I am Director of Campus Crusade for Christ for Alabama A & M University, where I also teach.

Are you currently attending school? If so, what are you working towards:

No; too old

Current Hobbies/Activities:

Walking my black lab: Shamma and UK basketball. I just saw the greatest basketball team I ever saw! We will never forget them. They were better than the 1964 UCLA team, the 1983 Georgetown team, and the 1996 UK team. They were the best college team I ever saw.

Unforgettable High School memory (good or bad):

All the incredible people who were wonderful to me and the legendary John Robinson. He treated me as a son and gave me my high school ring and told me something I will NEVER forget. I have never told anyone. He was the finest person I ever met in my lifetime

Ruth Powell was the best high school secretary I ever met:  Anywhere.  Hemingway said, "Truth and memory are never the same."  However, I can never forget her incredible compassion, energy, and moral sensibility.  She worked for the best Administrator in the State:  John Robinson.  She was simply the best ever.  I played basketball early and matureed early.  I lettered as a sophomore at Lone Oak High School in 1960.  Nobody ever knew it, but I began to receive money in the mail each week in an unmarked envelope.  It always arrived at the school office and typically the office assistant gave me the envelope.  It was very surreal and very mysterious.  I knew even then that it was inccorrect.  Was I being rewarded for athleticism?   We will never know.  I went to Mrs. Powell and she took care of it.  I never received another letter.  It allayed much anxiety.

Additionally, she and her husband Mr. Bill Powell were so beloved in the community.  I simply treasured both of them.  When I became Director of the Boys Club of Paducah along Mr. Powell devoted much of his column in an attempt to help our Club grow in the City.  He was incredibly for those who were disadvantaged.  I consider them among the finest people I ever met during my lifetime.  They were an important part of my life.  John Robinson gave my class ring in 1963 and she was the first to congratulate me.    They were a very important part of my  life.
